Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Understand the QMB139 clutch

The QMB139 uses the same centrifugal clutch design as the GY6 — shoes expand against a clutch bell as RPM rises. However, QMB139 clutch components are smaller and dimensioned differently from GY6 150cc parts. Purchase clutch springs specifically listed for QMB139 or 50cc Chinese scooters.

Step 2: Remove CVT cover, belt, and variator

Remove the CVT cover, belt, and variator assembly (see variator guide). The clutch is on the transmission shaft behind the variator.

Step 3: Remove the clutch bell

The clutch bell nut on the QMB139 is typically left-hand thread (turn clockwise to loosen). Use an impact wrench or hold the bell with a strap wrench. Remove the bell. If stuck, use a clutch/flywheel puller.

Step 4: Replace clutch springs

Remove the old clutch springs from the three shoes using needle-nose pliers. Install the new performance springs. Stiffer springs delay engagement to higher RPM — check that the springs fully seat on the shoes before reassembly.

Step 5: Reinstall clutch bell and reassemble CVT

Reinstall the clutch assembly and bell. Torque the clutch bell nut (left-hand thread — tighten counterclockwise) to approximately 35 Nm. Reinstall the variator, belt, and CVT cover.

Step 6: Test the engagement point

The engine should rev slightly higher before drive engages compared to stock. This is expected and correct. If the scooter creeps at idle or launches immediately from idle, the springs are too soft — try stiffer ones.

Tips & Notes

QMB139 clutch springs are not interchangeable with GY6 150cc springs — confirm 50cc compatibility before ordering.
A clutch upgrade pairs well with a big bore kit and performance exhaust — the higher engagement RPM keeps the engine in the power band.
Clutch rattle at idle is normal — it is the shoes tapping the bell before engagement and does not indicate a problem.
